Gilas women bow to Taiwanese side
MANILA, Philippines — Gilas Pilipinas women bowed to Chinese Taipei B, 83-92, to finish its campaign with not a win to show in the 2019 Women’s Jones Cup over the weekend at the Xinzhuang Gym in New Taipei City, Taiwan.
Wei-An Chen led the way for the home team with 20 points, three rebounds and three assist that also came with a steal and block.
Ling-Chuan Huang and Yu-Chin Chu added 16 and 10 points, respectively, for Taipei Blue which finished at fifth place of this six-team Asian invitational tourney with 2-3 record.
The Filipinas, on the other hand, failed to register a single win in five games for a last-place finish despite another good outing of veteran gunner Afril Bernardino with 24 markers, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Jack Animam pumped in 23 points and 14 rebounds in a losing cause for the Nationals who succumbed to a 17-30 first quarter deficit and never recovered from there on.
Gilas women previously lost to New Zealand (72-106), Japan (82-85), Taipei A (91-99) and South Korea (80-92).
Japan was hailed as the champion of this women’s tournament after completing a 5-0 sweep while New Zealand and Chinese Taipei settled for the silver and bronze medal, respectively.
