Blazers target 3rd win vs Cardinals
MANILA, Philippines — Banged-up College of St. Benilde hopes to extend its streak to three and reclaim a share of the lead with San Beda in the 95th NCAA basketball tournament as it tackles Mapua University today in the latter’s homecourt in Intramuros, Manila.
Hurdling their first two assignments against the Emilio Aguinaldo Generals, 69-66, on July 9 and versus the Perpetual Altas, 75-63, Tuesday, the Blazers seek to get going against the Cardinals at 4 p.m. even with all their health woes.
CSB got to a two-game roll despite an array of injuries. Yankie Haruna is still out due to a broken jaw, with Robby Nayve (concussion), Chris Flores (MCL), James Pasturan (shoulder), Carlo Lim (hamstring) and Cameroonian Clement Leutcheu (quad) having their own health problems.
Good thing CSB coach TY Tang has been getting strong contributions from different players headed by Pasturan, who had 19 points in their first win, and Carlo Young, who waxed hot and finished with 14 in their second triumph.
“It’s a positive thing and a very good sign that everybody is stepping up and ready to play when their name is called,” said Tang.
Against Mapua, which has dropped its first three outings, Tang warns his players not to get complacent.
“This season, the league is balanced and every game, you have to work hard for it. No such thing as easy game,” said Tang. The tourney is off to an exciting start with teams like Jose Rizal U and Emilio Aguinaldo College pulling off massive upsets.
