Remedy Alexis Rule resets national swim mark in worlds

Joey Villar - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Fil-Am Remedy Alexis Rule underscored her readiness for the Southeast Asian Games this early, shattering Olympian Jasmine Alkhaldi’s four-year national mark in women’s 100-meter fly in the 18th FINA World Swimming Championships in Gwangju, Korea over the weekend.

Rule, 23, clocked one minute and .42 second to eclipse Alkhaldi’s 1:01.00 clocking she set in the SEAG in Singapore in 2015.

Rule wound up 30th overall in the worlds.

The University of Texas alumna is also training her sights on the Olympic selection time of 59.66 seconds for a spot in the 2020 Tokyo Games.

Nicole Justine Oliva, a Youth Olympics veteran and also a national-record holder, wound up 31st in women’s 400m free in 4:20.03 while SEAG medalist James Deiparine finished 51st in men’s 100m breaststroke in 1:02.84.

Luke Michael Gebbie is also part of the four-member Phl team in the eight-day event serving as part of their SEAG buildup.

Oliva, Rule and Gebbie gained berths in the worlds by hitting the “B” Qualifying Times, while Deiparine, who barely missed the QTB by 0.01 second, was handed the fourth slot.

In the worlds, a national federation with less than four qualifiers is allowed to enter one additional member.

The four are also set to see action in the mixed 4x100m free and mixed 4x100m medley relays.
