PSL toys with new idea: 2 points for an ace

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Superliga (PSL) is toying with an idea that could generate more excitement to the sport of volleyball in the country.

Philip Ella Juico, PSL chairman, yesterday told the PSA Forum that they are looking at rewarding two points for a service ace.

“It’s a wild thought – a service ace earning two points,” said Juico during the press launch for the PSL All-Filipino, which unfurls on June 15.

“We just want to show the other countries that we can come up with our own innovations,” said Juico.

The former chairman of the Philippine Sports Commission said he has brought up the idea before Larong Volleyball ng Pilipinas (LVPI) president Peter Cayco.

If given the green light, the new ruling may be applied in this year’s PSL Invitational in October.

“I’ve discussed this with our colleagues, including the LVPI, and I was told to write a letter so they can present it to the FIVB (international federation),” said Juico at the Amelie Hotel-Manila.

The head coaches and key players of the competing teams, led by defending champion Petron, graced the forum.

Others vying for the prestigious crown are Cignal, F2 Logistics, Foton, Marinerang Pilipina, Generika-Ayala, Sta. Lucia, United VC and PLDT.

The All-Filipino tournament among nine teams kicks off on June 15 and will end on Aug. 30. A total of 86 matches will be played on 36 playing dates, according to PSL director Ginio Panganiban.

The PSL is looking at staging an out-of-town game in Cagayan de Oro or a return trip to Cadiz in Negros Occidental for this tourney.
