Ex-Green Archer Zamora headlines sports personalities victorious in midterm elections

MANILA, Philippines — Former La Salle Team Captain Francis Zamora ended the Estrada's decades long dominance in San Juan after beating out Janella Ejercito in the mayoral race on Monday.

The two-time UAAP champion garnered a total of 35,060 votes to top Ejercito's 24,813 and effectively ended the Estrada's 50-year rule in the city.

Meanwhile, other sports personalities also came out victorious in their electoral bids.

Former Jose Rizal University head coach Vergel Meneses won as mayor in Bulakan town, Bulacan while UAAP executive director Rebo Saguisag won as councilor in Makati.

Ex-PBA star Dondon Hontiveros and Adamson men's basketball coach Franz Pumaren also came out victorious as councilors in the second district of Cebu and in the third district of Quezon City, respectively.

Former PBA player Paul Artadi also bagged a seat as councilor in San Juan.

As of posting, former UP Women's Volleyball player Pia Cayetano ranks fourth in the Senate race.

Gilas Pilipinas head coach Yeng Guiao, meanwhile, failed to secure a Congress seat in Pampanga.
