UST jolts Ateneo in 3-set stunner to take Game 1
QUEZON CITY, Philippines -- The UST Golden Tigresses drew first blood against the Ateneo Lady Eagles in straight-set fashion, 25-17, 25-16, 25-20, in Game One of the 81st UAAP women's volleyball finals at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Saturday.
Led by league MVP Sisi Rondina, the Tigresses dominated top-seeded Ateneo and notched 1-0 lead in their best-of-three series. The last time UST beat Ateneo was in Season 74.
The España-based squad clicked on offense while errors and reception woes haunted the Lady Eagles.
Despite a stronger fight from Ateneo in the third set, the deficit proved too much for the Katipunan-based volleybelles.
Kat Tolentino and Maddie Madayag were bright spots for Ateneo.
UST, which is now on a seven-game win streak, will try to sweep their foes in Game Two on Wednesday.
