FEU stuns Ateneo, forces sudden death for finals berth
MANILA, Philippines – The FEU Lady Tamaraws stayed alive after pulling off an emphatic upset over the Ateneo Lady Eagles in five sets, 10-25, 25-23, 25-22, 12-25, 15-8, in the semifinals of the 81st UAAP women’s volleyball tournament on Saturday to force a do-or-die match.
The Morayta-based squad, led by graduating hitter Heather Guino-o and bench spark plug Jeanette Villareal, extended their season after besting the top-seeded Lady Eagles.
Despite a crushing 10-25 opening-set loss, the Lady Tamaraws were able to slug it out for the victory.
Errors proved to be Ateneo's downfall as crucial miscues gave the set to FEU in both the second and third cantos.
Despite a momentum-shifting set four win by Ateneo, FEU was able to convert in the clutch for the cardiac victory.
Ateneo and FEU will meet again on Wednesday for a chance to play in the finals.
