Okumu on Motolite coaching stint in PVL: 'It's not official'
MANILA, Philippines — With UP's UAAP season already in the books, Lady Maroons head coach Godfrey Okumu was quick to shut down rumors that he will be mentoring Motolite in the upcoming Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference in May.
"It's not official. You know, people hear stories and say things... but I'm still waiting for them to ask me to help them," the Kenyan tactician said in an interview.
Motolite is a new team that will suit up in the new PVL season. Led by Myla Pablo, the squad will feature a handful of Lady Maroons in Ayel Estrañero, Isa Molde, Tots Carlos and Marist Layug.
Okumu, however, was adamant in saying he was not in any way committed to the squad at the moment.
"Maybe other teams might ask me, maybe Foton might ask me. I'm still hanging and waiting," he added.
But there was one sure thing for the Japan-based tactician.
"What I wanna say and make clear is [that] I'm still with UP and not any other team," Okumu said.
Okumu has been head coach of the Lady Maroons for two years now, sporting two identical 6-8 records in UAAP seasons 80 and 81.
The Kenyan mentor also helped UP win two offseason championships in collegiate conferences of the PVL and the Philippine Super Liga.
