MANILA, Philippines — Petron Blaze tries to inch closer to a league-best 13th finals appearance and pull off a perfect season as it hopes to finish off Cignal HD Thursday in the Philippine Superliga Grand Prix at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan City.

The Blaze Spikers took Game One of their best-of-three showdown, 20-25, 25-14, 25-13, 25-18, Tuesday and could finish the HD Spikers off at 4:15 p.m. on their way to making the finals for a record 13th time and winning five championships along the way.

And Petron is expected to rely anew on the power-spiking duo of Katherine Bell and Stephanie Niemer, who uncorked 24 points apiece in leading Petron to its 15th straight win in as many games this conference.

Its magical run was made more special by conceding just two sets including one against Cignal in the semis that somehow made Petron coach Shaq delos Santos a little wary.

“It was a tough and difficult set,” said delos Santos in Filipino. “But we didn’t let it pull us down and bounced back when we needed it, which is more important,” he added.

F2, which claimed the series opener, 25-14, 17-25, 25-16, 25-22, likewise goes for the jugular against PLDT Home Fibr at 4:15 p.m.

The Cargo Movers went to two-time Grand Prix MVP Lindsay Stalzer’s 29-hit effort to snare a 1-0 series lead over the Power Hitters, who are expected to bounce back strong following that Game One defeat.

Meanwhile, Marinerang Pilipino became the newest member of the league and will make its debut in the All-Filipino Conference in June, according to league chair Philip Ella Juico.

Vilet Ponce-de Leon will coach the team that will have a core composed of University of the East standouts Judith Abil and Seth Rodriguez and San Beda star Cesca Racraquin.
