It’s Keith Thurman or Danny Garcia for Manny Pacquiao
Floyd Mayweather, Jr. in town
MANILA, Philippines — Manny Pacquiao’s choices for his next opponent are down to two – WBA (super) welterweight champion Keith Thurman and former light-welterweight king Danny Garcia.
“We’re looking at Thurman and Garcia,” said international matchmaker Sean Gibbons yesterday amid reports that Pacquiao is close to sealing the deal with the 30-year-old Thurman.
Pacquiao is looking at July 13 as the date of his next fight. Las Vegas looms as the best possible venue.
Gibbons was with the senator and reigning WBA weltweight champion at the latter’s swanky residence in Damariñas Village in Makati when he fielded questions via text.
“But we’re waiting to see what happens with Danny Garcia on April 20,” added Gibbons of the 30-year-old American.
Just a stone’s throw away yesterday was Floyd Mayweather Jr., who’s in town for a short visit that took him to Boracay over the weekend.
Mayweather, enjoying his retirement, was scheduled to meet the press at 1:30 p.m. in Makati but had a delayed session with the country’s most famous dermatologist.
Pacquiao had sought a rematch with Mayweather. But the retired superstar is not committing himself to a second fight with Pacquiao.
Garcia will fight Adrian Granados for the WBC (silver) welterweight crown in Carson, California. His performance should determine whether or not he gets the date with Pacquiao.
