Athletes quarters back in shape

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Sports Commission says most of the athletes who were eased out of their quarters at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex on Vito Cruz and at Philsports in Pasig are back in their old nests.

Athletes from around 10 sports were practically rendered homeless when the PSC worked on the renovation of their quarters last December.

It created some apprehension for athletes preparing for the 30th Southeast Asian Games in November. They said their training was disrupted by the renovation project.

But PSC chairman William Ramirez made sure things did not get out of hand by providing the athletes temporary quarters and a place  for training.

Among the affected athletes were those from weightlifting and wrestling at the RMSC and fencing, karatedo and muay thai at Philsports.

The PSC shouldered the expenses for athletes who were forced to rent condominium and apartment units, and those who went to private gyms and training venues to make sure their SEA Games preparations went on.

The living and training quarters in the two PSC-operated venues have been refurbished along with the mess halls.
