POC disputes reports Indonesia might take over SEAG hosting
MANILA, Philippines — Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) spokesman Ed Picson denied reports of a possible takeover of the Southeast Asia Games hosting by Indonesia.
Reports from the Daily Tribune and an Indonesian news outlet surfaced after the Philippines encountered roadblocks in getting the budget for hosting the biennial meet from November 30 to December 11.
According to a Facebook post by Indonesia Skyline, the Southeast Asian Olympic Council had reportedly said that Indonesia is the "strongest option" to replace the Philippines as the host of the biennial sports meet.
But the POC was quick to deny the possibility of losing hosting rights.
"[There's] no truth to that," Picson said in a text message to Philstar.com.
"The SEA games is a go." he said.
The reports came a month after a cut in the SEAG budget where only P5 billion of the proposed P7.5 billion budget was approved for the biennial meet.
Indonesia had first expressed interest in taking over the hosting chores back in 2017 when conflict in Marawi had sparked.
