Tigresses blast Lady Warriors

Kristina Villanueva - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — University of Santo Tomas ran roughshod over University of the East, 25-18, 25-14, 25-20, to rack up its third straight win for a share of the second spot at the end of the first round in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball yesterday.

Eya Laure soared for a quick kill to put the Tigresses at match point, 24-19, then Sisi Rondina finally got her crosscourt hit through after her fourth try to seal it after Dimdim Pacres netted her attack to allow the Lady Warriors to save.

The Tigresses joined four-peat seeking La Salle Lady Spikers at the second spot with their similar 5-2 marks.

“We really worked hard for it. We didn’t waste any opportunity,” said Rondina.

Rondina smashed 17 points with all but one coming off spikes while also dishing out 10 excellent receptions and seven digs.

Laure put in 15 points built on 11 attacks, two aces and two blocks that went with seven digs as the duo led the way for UST.

“This is for Ate Sisi because this is her last playing year. We talked about this and I told her that I will help her in any way I can just so we could give her the proper exit she deserves,” said Laure.

The Lady Warriors finished the first round at the bottom of the standings, slipping to their fourth straight loss for 1-6.

University of the Philippines collapsed in the first set but recovered its  bearing to trounce Adamson, 25-27, 25-14, 25-12, 25-21, and get back on track at the end of the first round of eliminations.

The Lady Maroons joined the Far Eastern U Lady Tams at fourth with their 4-3 records.
