Lady Eagles eager to soar higher

Kristina Villanueva - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Ateneo seeks to fortify its hold of the top spot while University of the Philippines hopes to recover lost ground as they face separate lowly foes today at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan.

The Lady Eagles stumbled on opening day against archnemesis La Salle Lady Spikers but have reeled off four straight wins since, the last against erstwhile co-leader Lady Maroons last Sunday.

Facing a tougher challenge from UP in the third set, ADMU needed three match points to thwart its foe, with a crafty dump by Deanna Wong proving to be the decider in its 25-21, 25-15, 28-26 victory.

“It’s good to see that the team didn’t back down, didn’t let up and continued fighting. It’s a show of character that we could finish that last set,” said Lady Eagle Kat Tolentino.

Never settling, ADMU guns to display its A-game – one better than its last – against Adamson, joint sixth with National U at 1-4, at 2 p.m.

“Every game is a learning day. We still have more to show. We will be better than that. If you always think that way, every game you will be better than your best,” said Lady Eagles coach Oliver Almadro.

UP, which scored a huge 21-25, 25-20, 25-21, 20-25, 15-12 win over DLSU, fell prey to its foe’s archrival, ADMU, to tumble to fifth spot at 3-2.

Tots Carlos and Isa Molde, held to 10 and six points, respectively, against the Lady Eagles, are expected to regain their form against the struggling Lady Bulldogs, at 4 p.m. as the Lady Maroons look to force a four-way tie at second with the DLSU Lady Spikers, the FEU Lady Tams and the UST Tigresses, each with 4-2 records.

Meanwhile, the Lady Falcons will rally behind Bernadette Flora, Eli Soyud and Joy Dacoron.
