DOHA – Thirdy Ravena is well aware going with the honor and privilege of making the national team is the responsibility to be ready to be of help in any way he can.

And he said now he’s focused to be ready mentally and physically.

“I’m thankful to the coaches for their trust and confidence. But now that I’m here, the best I can do is to prepare really well,” said Ravena, who made the Final 12 for the Gilas-Qatar match with Andray Blatche, June Mar Fajardo, Poy Erram Troy Rosario, Japeth Aguilar, Paul Lee, Mark Barroca, Gabe Norwood, Marcio Lassiter, Scottie Thompson and Jayson Castro.

Raymond Almazan failed to make it due to an ankle sprain suffered in their first practice session here Sunday.

Gilas coach Yeng Guiao said it’s a blessing that they decided to bring in 14 players here.

“At first, we’re thinking on bringing just 13, including RR Pogoy who is not free to play in the Qatar game. Upon the consensus of the coaching staff, we brought 14 and it’s a good decision looking back,” said Guiao.

But Guiao stressed Ravena was in strong contention even if Almazan didn’t get injured.

“He provides a role for us. He’s a defensive stopper with his able body, strong body. He has offense but his role really is to provide us a defensive option on the best scorer of the other side, meaning wing men,” said Guiao of the Ateneo hotshot.

Guiao and his staff decided on the Final 12 as Almazan’s sprained ankle swelled badly Monday.

“He’s no longer able to practice. And with the limited time, no time to wait, it’s no brainer we have the Final 12. Kasi hindi rin pwede si RR Pogoy (because of his suspension),” said Guiao.

“I saw my name in the lineup on the SBP Facebook page (Tuesday afternoon here). At first, I was shocked. But I’m now done with the congratulations and praises. It’s now about getting ready for anything I can do to help the national cause,” said Ravena.

Meanwhile, Almazan said he’s disappointed with his injury but he’s staying positive.

“Kung ano pwedeng itulong ibibigay ko. Mag-iingay ako sa bench to cheer for my teammates,” said Almazan.
