Que tumbles off leaderboard with 74
MANILA, Philippines — Angelo Que hobbled at the front where he anchored his impressive opening round bid, limping with a 74 and dropping from joint fourth to a share of 27th halfway through the Indonesian Masters now led by Thai Poom Saksansin in Jakarta yesterday.
Que struggled in a switch in tee-off time, double bogeying the par-4 No. 5 and dropping a stroke on the next in a fumbling start in one of the late flights. He did recover with a birdie on the ninth but flubbed a number of chances and settled for a run of pars at the back.
His frontside 38 was too high for the 32 he shot in turning a quiet backside start into a scorching finish Thursday for a 67 that put the power-hitting Filipino alongside the event’s top draws, including Swede Henrik Stenson. He even stood a shot better than world No. 2 Justin Rose of England.
But with his 74 and a 141, Que tumbled and now lay 11 strokes behind Saksansin, who sizzled with a stirring bogey-free nine-under 63 laced with a frontside 30 for a 130. He is three-up on compatriots Jakraphan Presirigorn and Suradit Yongcharoenchai, who rallied with 65 and 66, respectively, for 133s.
Stenson blew a seven-under card with two bogeys in the last three holes, settling for a 68 for solo fourth at 135, five behind Saksasin.
Rose holed out with a bogey at resumption of his unfinished first round play for a 68 then matched his output on the second day to keep his title-retention drive going at 136, six shots behind the leader.
While Que safely made it to the weekend play despite his over-par card, Miguel Tabuena stumbled at the finish and missed the cut at even 144.
Well on his way to the next two rounds, Tabuena, who opened with a 71, squandered a two-under card after nine holes with a shaky windup, making three bogeys and a double-bogey against a lone birdie for a 40 and a 74 and a 145.
Tony Lascuña also headed for home with a three-over card after 13 holes for a five-over overall at presstime.
