MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine women’s foil team bagged the gold medal in the ongoing Akari Asian Under 23 fencing team championships at the Ynares Sports Center in Pasig yesterday.

The team first dominated Thailand in the preliminaries, 45-23, before surprising Asian powerhouse Korean team, 45-39.  Going for the gold in the finals, the Hong Kong team, which earlier demolished Chinese Taipei, proved no match to the Filipinos, losing a close 41-45.

Fencing Confederation of Asia president Celso Dayrit was on hand to present the medals in an emotional awarding ceremony where the big Filipino crowd loudly sang the national anthem while the Philippine Flag was being hoisted.

A total of 222 fencers participated in the six-day competition which featured 12 individual and team events.  Aside from the gold, Team Phl had two bronzes in the individual categories courtesy of Samantha Catantan and Nathaniel Perez in the men’s individual foil event.
