Taulava, Guiao ecstatic for NLEX return
MANILA, Philippines — NLEX’s ageless glue guy and ringmaster are back from their national team duties, and both couldn’t wait to pick up where they left off with the Road Warriors.
"I'm excited because even though it's been a tiring month, I just want to see the guys apply new knowledge and lessons we've learned from playing internationally,” head coach Yeng Guiao said.
“We're bringing in some adjustments, some new concepts and hopefully that can help us grow as a team and as individuals," he added. "There's nothing like going back to your original routine and regular grind.”
"I’ve been in dreamland the past 2 months," Taulava posted to his Instagram last Tuesday, thanking everyone who supported the national team. The veteran big man also said that he loves his new nicknames from his latest national team stint: “Splash Tito," "Splash Dad," and "Stretch Forty-Five."
NLEX, severely undermanned, still managed to chalk-up a 3-2 win-loss record with the help of assistant coach Jojo Lastimosa. The Road Warriors, with Guiao back in the fold, resumes their bid for a playoff spot in the season-ending conference against Blackwater Elite tonight, then take on Barangay Ginebra on Oct. 5.
"I was really happy with the developments when I was gone. I had just asked the guys, the coaching staff in particular, for a 50% winning record, and they did better than that," Guiao said the team’s record.
"I have to give them credit. There's nothing I can ask for in terms of the job they did when I was away. Now the challenge is to continue the tone they have set while I was away, and hopefully get even better,” he closed.
