Altas get back at Chiefs; Cardinals shock Blazers
MANILA, Philippines — Perpetual Help drew inspiration from the return of playmaker Edgar Charcos as it got back at first round tormentor Arellano University, 57-45, yesterday to inch closer to No. 4 College of St. Benilde in the 94th NCAA men’s basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan.
Prince Eze powered his way to 20 points and 19 rebounds with four shot blocks while Charcos turned in six points, four boards, four assists and four steals in his return from a four-game absence due to knee injury as the Altas snapped a three-game skid to improve to 6-5.
The Las Piñas-based school, which avenged its 72-76 loss to Arellano in the first round, remained at fifth but closed in on the Blazers, who earlier dropped a shock 83-86 defeat to the Mapua Cardinals for a 7-5 card.
Justin Serrano and Laurenz Victoria took charge in the clutch as Mapua surprised St. Benilde to stay in the semis hunt at 4-8.
Down by two points with six minutes left, the Cardinals went to Serrano, who stepped up and fired six straight baskets while Victoria hit two big shots to keep Mapua in the playoff race.
Serrano finished with 12 points while Victoria had 16 points, six rebounds and six assists.
St. Benilde’s loss likewise sent idle Letran to solo fourth at 7-4.
