Camarines Sur lass clinches discus gold in Batang Pinoy

Kristina Villanueva - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Mary Grace Joson of Camarines Sur hurled 26.87m in girls’ discus throw to become the first gold medal winner in the Batang Pinoy National Championships at the Baguio City Athletic Bowl yesterday.

Joson logged the title-clinching feat to kick off the medal chase in the annual sports event for 15 years old and below which was actually slated to open Saturday but was rescheduled as Typhoon Ompong battered the city.

Some 1,810 athletes from Luzon (77 local government units), 828 from Visayas (38 LGUs) and 800 from Mindanao (37 LGUs) are vying for top honors in 27 sports in the annual national championships.

Janine Ledina of Zambales took the silver with a 26.64m throw while General Santos City’s Althea Guadalupe heaved 26.54m for third.

Meanwhile, Leyte’s Christian Zamora ruled the boys’ side, tallying 40.14m. Jerome Acejo of Maasin City and Christian Ote of Aklan secured second and third, respectively.

Earlier, Dasmariñas City bet Jason Jabol and Bacolod City’s Antonette Jay Aguillon took the spotlight by ruling the 100m dash. Jabol clocked 11.59 seconds to rule the boys side while 16-year-old Aguillon rallied in the last 30 meters to reign supreme in the distaff side in 13.20sec.

“It was a scary feeling for me because I’m not used to competing in a national event like this,” said Aguillon in Filipino.

Dianna Hurano of Bohol took the silver in 13.22 seconds while Shane Avryl of Leyte clocked 13.32 seconds for the bronze.

“This is my favorite event so I did my best to win,” said Jabol, a 15-year-old student of Immaculate Concepcion Academy in Dasmariñas.

In the boys 110m hurdles, Misamis Occidental’s Peterson Laparan posted 15.97 sec for the gold while Bacolod City’s Ara Rahbea Delotavo won the girls’ side in 17seconds.
