From Asiad to Araneta: Standhardinger powers SMB past NLEX
MANILA, Philippines — San Miguel Beer thumped NLEX, 125-112, to open their Governors' Cup on a winning note in the nightcap of Saturday's PBA hostilities at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Rookie Christian Standhardinger, who arrived Saturday afternoon straight from the Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia, poured 36 points and 11 rebounds en route to being named as the best player of the game.
"They played to the letter. Our gameplan is to execute [our plays]," San Miguel Beer head coach Leo Austria said of his players.
Standhardinger's 36 markers was his career-best. The Filipino-German who was the overall pick of the last PBA draft, picked up where he left off in the Asiad, registering another efficient shooting night (14-for-17).
The Beermen and the Road Warriors take turns on Blackwater Elite. San Miguel will have first crack on Sept. 5, followed by NLEX on Sept. 26.
