MANILA, Philippines — Magnolia Hotshots, without their star point guard Paul Lee, banked on their defense to make a mincemeat of NorthPort Batang Pier, 104-87, Saturday night at the Big Dome.

Veteran Mark Barroca led all of the Hotshots in scoring with 20 markers. Jio Jalalon chimed in 13 more to fill the void left by Lee, helping the team  overwhelm the Batang Pier who was also missing their star playmaker Stanley Pringle.

"Ang aming adjustment is that ‘yung effort namin ay doblehin,  kasi 'yun nga, nabawasan kami ng key player. But I’m very happy with my guards. They stepped up big sa last two games namin—Barroca, Jalalon, (PJ Simon) and (Justin Melton)," Magnolia head coach Chito Victolero offered.

Magnolia registered a franchise-best 19 steals. This translated to 41 points, enabling the Hotshots to pull away by as many as 29 markers at one point.

The Scores

Magnolia 104 - Barroca 20, Dela Rosa 17, Travis 15, Jalalon 13, Herndon 8, Reavis 8, Simon 8, Melton 4, Brondial 4, Sangalang 4, Ramos 3, Mendoza 0, Gamalinda 0, Pascual 0, Abundo 0.

NorthPort 87 - Woods 25, Taha 22, Grey 10, Gabayni 10, Tautuaa 9, Guinto 6, Javelona 3, Fortuna 2, Espinas 0, Arana 0, Flores 0.

Quarters: 27-17, 48-39, 75-62, 104-87

The Hotshots will enjoy over two weeks worth of break before taking on Phoenix on Sept. 23.

NorthPort, for its part, will seek to arrest their losing skid when they face Barangay Ginebra on Wednesday, Sept. 5
