New IM Quizon rules Eastern Asia Juniors Open chess

MANILA, Philippines – Daniel Quizon on Wednesday downed Kang Taehyung of South Korea to rule the Eastern Asia Juniors Open Championships 2018 in Gangneung, South Korea and earn an International Master title and a Grandmaster norm.

Quizon, 14, actually ended up tied for first with another Korean Ahn Hongjin, who drew his final round game with FIDE Master Erdene Baasansuren of Mongolia with 7.5 points but the Filipino ended up topping the nine-round tournament after three tiebreaks were applied.

The tiebreaks applied were win-over-the-other, which ended up with a draw in the third round, number of wins both with six and finally, Median-Buccholz with Cuizon having 45 and Ahn 41.5.

Quizon thus ended up with an IM title plus a GM norm to boot.

The reigning ASEAN U14 champion and Asian Youth U18 runner-up will try to earn more GM norms as he is planning to join the Malaysian Open late this month.

Another Philippine bet, Kylen Joy Mordido, smashed Indonesian Diajeng Theresa Singih to ran away with the title with 6.5 points, a full two points away from Singih and Vietnam’s WFM Nguyen Thi Minh Oanh.

Mordio also clinched the WIM title plus a WGM norm.

Both Quizon and Mordido were funded by Dasmarinas City Mayor Elpidio Barzaga Jr.
