Edward Kelly suffers 2nd round KO loss in ONE Macau card
MACAU — Edward Kelly kept his assignment at bay. But that was only good for nearly two rounds.
Unable to equal Narantungalag Jadambaa’s grappling prowess, Kelly suffered a second-round loss via referee stoppage in the main card of ONE Championship's "Pinnacle of Power" at the Studio City event center here on Saturday night.
Kelly tried to keep the fight off the ground but Jadambaa, a grizzled veteran of 17 professional fights and a former featherweight champion, was just too much to handle.
The burly Mongolian, who looked hell-bent on overpowering the young Filipino early, juggled between takedowns and thunderous strikes.
Kelly was able to match Jadambaa's fists and takedown attempts late in the opening salvo with a distinct spinning back-fist, but he was no longer able to lean on that ferocity to buoy him to the final frame.
Referee Yuji Shimada called the fight off at the 4:58 mark of the middle round.
The loss denies the Team Lakay ward a momentum to build on as he was coming off a win over Meas Meu in January.
Jadambaa, who has defeated Kelly's older brother Eric in the past, returns to the win column after losing the belt to Marat Gafurov in November 2016.
