Nikko Huelgas ranks 6th in Korean triathlon
MANILA, Philippines — Two-time Southeast Asian Games champ Nikko Huelgas showed top form and placed sixth in the men’s elite division of the 2018 Gunsan ASTC Long Distance Triathlon Asian Championships in Gunsan, South Korea over the weekend.
Huelgas covered the 1.5K swim, 83K bike and 20K run course in 3:54:54 to finish No. 6 among the 28 who finished the race played in 13.5 degree conditions.
Belarus’ Aliaksandr Vasilevich ruled the field with his 3:40:11 effort, beating New Zealand’s Jack Moody (3:42.28) and Korea’s Seing Hun Seo (3:51:01) for the top plum.
Romania’s Alexandru Diaconu (3:51:21) and Chinese Taipei’s Chia Hai Chang (3:52:10) rounded out the Top 5 ahead of the Filipino ace.
Huelgas submitted 20:52 in the swim, which was shortened by half from the original 3K distance due to the 13.9 degree Celcius water temperature, then logged 2:10: 42 in the mostly flat bike course and 1:19:22 in the totally flat run en route to the Top 6 placing.
He finished ahead of competitors from Romania, Korea, Taipei and Kazakhstan.
