Aces go full throttle, run Dyip aground

Nelson Beltran - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Alaska Milk brandished its dreaded defensive weapon and scored heavily in transition to deal Columbian Dyip a crushing blow in the second quarter and go on to pull off a 134-103 rout in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum last night.

The Aces shattered the Columbian quintet, 42-9, in the second period and sustained their charge to fashion out the most lopsided game in the mid-season tourney.

It’s actually a second resounding victory for the Aces following a 93-74 drubbing of the Blackwater Elite Sunday.

“We blew it in the second quarter. That was the game. It’s one of the games that our shots went in,” said Alaska coach Alex Compton of their second win in three starts.

Vic Manuel came through with another topnotch game off the bench, following up a career-best 27-point outing with 26 markers to lead the Aces past the Columbian squad that ironically faltered and failed while fielding a new import in John Bailey Fields, a Euro League veteran with fresh stint in the Aries Trikalla Basketball Club in Greece. He had 39 points and 16 rebounds.

Chris Newsome poured in 30 points while Arinze Onuaku collected 23 rebounds and 15 markers as Meralco also nailed a second win in three starts on a 106-90 mauling of NLEX later in the night.

The Road Warriors absorbed their third straight loss in the game marked by a little commotion after the buzzer as coach Yeng Guiao felt disrespected as Newsome converted a triple with the game won in the dying seconds.
