MANILA, Philippines — Ateneo recovered from a sorry setback to arch rival La Salle the last time out and halted Far Eastern U’s four-game run with an emphatic 25-19, 25-21, 25-17 victory in the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan last night.

Jhoanna Maraguinot and Kat Tolentino combined for 26 points as the Lady Eagles bounced back from a heartrending 20-25, 17-25, 26-24, 20-25 defeat to the Lady Spikers last weekend and tied their victims at third at 5-3.

ADMU also avenged its 25-19, 21-25, 25-18, 20-25, 9-15 loss to FEU on opening day.

“It was just in the first round. The second round is a new round so we just have to play like how we really play. We just have to stay focused, concentrate and heart strong,” said Lady Eagles skipper Maddie Madayag.

Toni Basas finished with 10 points and Celine Domingo added seven markers but top hitter Bernadeth Pons struggled for just five points for the Lady Tams.

Earlier, University of the East sustained its impressive showing the last time out, repelling University of Santo Tomas via a 25-23, 18-25, 28-26, 26-24, to post its first back-to-back wins in six years.

The Lady Warriors rebounded from a listless showing in the second set with strong finishing kick in the last two, battling back from 20-24 and 22-24 deficits, respectively, to score a follow-up to their stunning five-set reversal over the Adamson Lady Falcons last Sunday.

It was UE’s first back-to-back victories since winning two straight against University of the Philippines in Jan. 2012.

The Lady Warriors remained in the cellar at 2-6 with the Tigresses, whom they beat for the first time in the Final Four era.

“Ever since the season started, my goal was to change the way people look at UE which is slowly happening now with the help of my coaches and teammates,” said UE libero Kath Arado, who dished out 32 excellent receptions and 28 digs and finished with two points.

The Lady Warriors actually blew a seven-point lead early in the fourth and trailed, 22-24, before a double block by Sel Baliton and Mary Ann Mendrez sparked UE’s closing 4-0 binge.
