Lady Falcons trap Archersin biggest UAAP upset

Olmin Leyba - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Adamson sent shockwaves across the UAAP  Season 80 women’s volleyball competition, pulling off a massive 25-18, 15-25, 25-19, 25-22 upset over defending champion La Salle last night at Filoil Flying V Center.

The Lady Falcons showed fighting heart in overcoming deficits in the third and fourth sets to clear the way for the biggest reversal of the tournament so far, in the process snapping a two-game slide and improving  to an even 3-3 card. The Lady Spikers absorbed their second loss in six starts.

“This week has been a roller coaster for us,” said AdU coach Air Padda, who lost a five-setter to Ateneo last Wednesday and a shutout to Santo Tomas  last week.. “Our goal was to make the school proud. We didn’t even talk about winning. (But) you could see that they just wanted to win.”

Eli Soyud, a transferee from La Salle, was a woman on a mission against her former team, topscoring with 18 for AdU while Mylene Paat and Joy Dacoron added 15 apiece.

With the Lady Spikers threatening to take a 2-1 set lead, the Lady Falcons willed themselves back and wiped out an 11-15 deficit to take the third frame. In the fourth, Paat caught fire and spearheaded a 12-1 exchange for an 18-11 cushion.

Major Baron paced DLSU with 13 with Des Cheng making 10.

Earlier, Far Eastern went back-to-back for the first time this season, pulling off a 25-20, 25-17, 24-26, 25-22 win over University of the East to seize a share of third with idle Ateneo at 3-2.

Bernadeth Pons punched in 21 points and had 24 digs and Celine Domingo added 19 as the Lady Tams dealt the Lady Warriors their sixth straight loss.
