Fergie on US anthem at NBA All-Star: I’m a risk-taker
MANILA, Philippines — The format of the 2018 NBA All-Star Game was not the only different thing that night.
Fergie's rendition of the "Star-Spangled Banner" was also a departure from tradition.
The internet did not waste time in mocking the American singer's rendition of the US national anthem.

I just watched Fergie’s national anthem performance and omg I couldn’t even make it to the end I was cringing so bad. My ears will never be the same.

Fergie, however, said it was not her intention to botch the national anthem and that she just took a risk.
"I've always been honored and proud to perform the national anthem and last night I wanted to try something special for the NBA," the singer told TMZ Sports.
"I'm a risk-taker artistically, but clearly this rendition didn't strike the intended tone. I love this country and honestly tried my best," she added.
Fergie was not the first artist to take a creative approach in singing the US anthem.
Marvin Gaye delivered a dramatic rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" during the 1983 All-Star Game.
