PSA to honor SMC, other backers in rites

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) and long-time backers of sports renew their ties for the staging of the SMC-PSA Annual Awards Night on Feb. 27 at the Maynila Hall of the Manila Hotel.

First on the list is giant conglomerate San Miguel Corp. which, for the nth time, serves as title sponsor of the formal affair recognizing the country’s top sports achievers.

Also back on board is energy drink Milo, which likewise does its share of honoring promising young athletes through its Milo Junior Athletes of the Year Award.

Long-time partner Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) is also doing its share, along with Cignal TV, which will air highlights of the awards night for the second straight year.

“The PSA is very grateful for all the support and help extended by our solid friends in sports to ensure the successful staging of this year’s PSA Awards Night,” said president Dodo Catacutan of SPIN.ph.

Coming in as new backers are Tapa King, Mighty Sports, and Chooks To Go.

One of the country’s top fast-food chains, Tapa King serves as sponsor of the Athlete of the Year award to be bestowed on world champions Jerwin Ancajas, Krizziah Lyn Tabora, and Carlo Biado.

Chooks To Go, on the other hand, will be giving out for the first time the Mr. Fan Favorite “Manok Ng Bayan” award to Terrence Romeo being the top backer of the Gilas Pilipinas basketball team.

For its part, Mighty Sports teams up with the PSA to honor four-time PBA Most Valuable Player June Mar Fajardo as the hands down choice for Mr. Basketball.

Not to be missed out are the association’s other regular backers such as the PBA, Rain or Shine and GlobalPort.
