MANILA, Philippines – Despite being initially dropped from the Gilas Pilipinas pool, Alaska standout Calvin Abueva will be included in the national team’s lineup that will be fielded against Australia in the second window of the 2019 FIBA World Cup qualifiers.

According to a Philstar.com source, Gilas head coach Chot Reyes himself made the revelation at a business forum in Makati City on Tuesday, an event that featured Reyes as a guest speaker.

Reyes, according to the same source, said he has decided to welcome Abueva back to the Gilas fold after the player has displayed perseverance by attending the team’s recent weekly practices.

The do-it-all Alaska forward along with Rain or Shine center Raymond Almazan were axed from the pool last month after repeated no-shows in practice. Abueva had cited “personal reasons” for missing the sessions.

But despite getting cut, Abueva has since attended the most recent Gilas practices — including the team’s latest one at the Greenhills West gym Monday — eventually getting back to Reyes’ good graces.

Abueva is hoping to at least crack the Gilas lineup for the third window of the qualifiers.

Gilas will take on Australia in Melbourne on February 22 and Japan at the Mall of Asia Arena on February 25.
