Arellano tops Benilde in NC football

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Jumbel Guinabang came away with a brace, the last clinching a 3-2 victory for Arellano U over St. Benilde as the Chiefs zeroed in on their second championship in the NCAA seniors football tournament at the Rizal Memorial pitch Friday.

Guinabang, a 20-year-old member of the Phl U-19 team that competed in the ASEAN Football Championship in Vietnam two years ago, delivered the first goal barely two minutes into the contest then unleashed the other with three minutes left in extra time to power the Chiefs to the Game One win.

AU, which claimed its very first league title two years ago, goes for the clincher in Game Two at 6 p.m. tomorrow.

A decider, if necessary, will be held Wednesday.

The Blazers actually countered quickly from that early Guinabang hit as Daniel Lozio found the back of the goal a minute later to force a 1-1 count.

Charles Gamutan stepped up and beat two defenders to score on the 25th minute, shoving AU to the lead again.

However, the Blazers refused to give up as Renz Tulayba blasted in a goal from way outside the penalty box to force another tie going into halftime.
