Ateneo stays unbeaten, NU back in 2nd spot

MANILA, Philippines — Ateneo bucked a sluggish first quarter to beat University of Santo Tomas, 78-54, to extend its perfect run to eight games Saturday in the UAAP Season 80 juniors basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

After trailing 13-18 in the first 10 minutes of play, the Eagles held the Tiger Cubs to nine points in the second period to take a 35-27 lead at halftime and never looked back.
 
Dave Ildefonso took the scoring mantle for Ateneo with 20 points, SJ Belangel had 13 points, six rebounds and six assists while Jason Credo added 12 points, six boards and four assists.
 
Kai Sotto and Joaqui Manuel produced double-double numbers for the Eaglets with identical 11-point, 12-rebound production.
 
First round MVP race leader CJ Cansino came through with 16 points, 12 rebounds and four assists to lead the way for UST.
     
National University, behind Rhayyan Amsali’s 21 points, reclaimed solo second with an 86-81 conquest of defending champion Far Eastern University-Diliman, while Adamson University overwhelmed UP Integrated School, 76-58.
 
The Bullpups improved to 6-2, a game ahead of the third-running Tiger Cubs (5-3), while the Baby Tamaraws fell in a tie with the Baby Falcons in fourth spot at 4-4.
 
The UAAP on Friday forfeited NU’s season-opening 107-69 victory against University of the East for fielding a player who was not able to satisfy the league’s eligibility requirements.
 
Chris Calimag and Rogil Carlos teamed up for 42 points as De La Salle-Zobel overpowered the Junior Warriors, 93-74, for its third win in eight contests.
