Ubas, Unso post record feats in Thai meet

Olmin Leyba - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Janry Ubas dominated the men’s long jump while Patrick Ma. Unso dished out a record-breaking podium finish in the 110-meter hurdles Monday for Team Philippines in the Thailand Open Track and Field Championships.

Fresh from shattering the Philippine mark during the local time trials, Ubas continued to show fine form as he leapt to a distance of 7.78 meters to beat rivals Taiwanese Hua (7.53m) and Jia Xing Lin (7.42m) for the plum.

Ubas jumped 7.65m, 7.48m, then fouled but bounced back with 7.70m and 7.60m before saving his best for last to complete his dominating performance in the pre-Southeast Asian Games meet.

The winning leap was off the current Phl standard of 7.88 Ubas himself set last June 8 in Manila but it still good to contend for the SEAG gold as it surpassed the 7.75m golden jump submitted by Thai champ Supanara Sukhasvasti in the 2015 SEAG.

Unso, for his part, fell short of the mint but became the first Filipino hurdler to go sub-14 seconds.

The 26-year-old Unso clocked 13.91 seconds, obliterating the national record of 14.12 seconds he posted in a bronze medal feat in the 2015 SEAG, and placed third in the field.

Korean Byoungjun Kim took the gold with a new personal best and national mark of 13.39 while Thai Jamras Rittidet, the reigning SEAG titlist, grabbed the silver with 13.88.

The other Filipino bet, Clinton Kingsley Bautista wound up eighth in the 110-m hurdles final with a 14.46 second effort.
