Donaire confident, ready

Abac Cordero - The Philippine Star

LAS VEGAS – After stealing the thunder in Thursday’s press conference, Nonito Donaire Jr., all pumped up and full of excitement, said he doesn’t even care about his next opponent.

Donaire, the flashy Filipino world champion, gave up his chance to speak through the microphone after he was introduced during the press conference at Wynn Hotel.

Instead, the 33-year-old stood at centerstage, and at the top of his lungs shouted words like “Victory! Warrior! Victory!” and thumping his chest.

Members of Team Donaire, mostly white men and in their green track suits, stood nearby and echoed Donaire’s battlecry for Saturday’s WBO junior-featherweight title fight.

The challenger, Jessie Magdaleno of Las Vegas, could only watch a few seats away. In his turn at the microphone, he said he’d rip Donaire’s head off.

“Is that it? Is that it?” said Bob Arum after Donaire returned to his seat.

After the press conference announcing the undercard for the Manny Pacquiao-Jessie Vargas fight was over, Donaire faced the cameras.

“I’m just excited,” he said.

“I’m excited to show my capability and the style that I’ve been training for. I’m excited to show it,” said Donaire, who will be pitted against the 24-year-old Magdaleno.

Donaire said there’s only one battle plan which is to win convincingly.

“I always go for the knockout. You know me,” he said.

Donaire, back as junior-featherweight champion after a short fling at featherweight, said there are three things to expect from him on fight night.

“Explosiveness, maturity and overall talent,” he told Filipino scribes.

“I’m ready,” added Donaire (37-3 with 24 kockouts).

Then he tried to belittle his younger opponent, who’s undefeated in 23 fights with 17 knockouts.

“I don’t know him much. But he’s a kid. He’s a kid,” he said.

Donaire sounded like he doesn’t even care.

“I don’t worry about what he does. My only focus is victory. I don’t worry what he’s capable of or how strong he is. Or how fast he is, I don’t care,” he went on.

“I’ve been there. I’ve fought everybody,” he said.
