Pacquiao next foe still unknown

Abac Cordero - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - It’s been three weeks since Bob Arum said Manny Pacquiao was all set to name his opponent for what might be his farewell fight on April 9.

Last Thursday, the Filipino boxing icon celebrated his 37th birthday with his family and friends, hundreds of them, in his hometown in General Santos City.

By tradition, he shared his blessings by raffling off a brand-new car, a handful of motorcycles and giant TV sets.

Gospel music filled the air.

But there was no mention of boxing since those who joined him at the head table were friends in politics, including Vice President Jejomar Binay, who called the Pacquiao “the next senator.”

In return, Pacquiao, recounted a party guest, called Binay “the next President.”

Pacquiao is expected to spend his Christmas with his family. They may spend it out of the country, according to one of his aides.

And while he does, the boxing world awaits his decision regarding his next fight.

His promoter, Arum, is “surprised” by the delay.

The Top Rank chief went to the extent of saying he’ll push through with the April 9 card in Las Vegas whether Pacquiao is in or out.

Pacquiao has only a couple of names to choose from – Tim Bradley and Terence Crawford. Latest word is that Adrian Broner has joined the race.

According to a report, Pacquiao prefers a third match with Bradley while Arum wants Crawford, one of his own at Top Rank.

Speculation is that Arum is eyeing Crawford as his next star, and if he beats Pacquiao on April 9, then the young and undefeated American moves high up the ladder.

Regardless, Pacquiao doesn’t seem ready yet to name his opponent.

His ring adviser said the decision will come when it comes.
