Wild Card off limits when Pacman trains

Abac Cordero - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - It will come in big, bold letters, the sign that will say, “Off limits” when Manny Pacquiao strarts training at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles.

Pacquiao’s chief adviser, Mike Koncz, said he already spoke to Freddie Roach about the details of Pacquiao’s training.

The Filipino icon, slated to face Floyd Mayweather on May 2 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, is still in General Santos City.

Yesterday, he was back in the gym to train.

Koncz arrived from the United States last Sunday and proceeded to General Santos. He said “98 percent” of the training will be done in Los Angeles.

“Freddie already told me he’s going to be very, very strict with the access to the gym when Manny trains,” Koncz told The STAR.

“Everybody knows that everybody’s reputation and a lot of things will be on the line in this fight. It’s more than the money,” said Koncz.

“That’s why he’ll be very strict this time,” Koncz added.

The US training may begin on the first week of March.

Roach has moved Pacquiao’s training quarters from the upper deck of the Wild Card Gym to the ground floor to give the boxing superstar more privacy when he trains.

But somehow, people with no business being inside the gym as Pacquiao trains still manage to sneak in.

This time, it will be extra strict.

When in the United States, the 36-year-old Pacquiao trains daily with the option of resting on Sundays. He spars on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Pacquiao has a window of eight weeks to prepare for the fight, and he’s not wasting time in his home province.

Everybody’s excited for the fight but Pacquiao said he’s just taking it the way he normally does.

“Excited na lahat. Ako kalmado lang (Everybody’s excited but I try to stay calm),” he said.

Unless his schedule changes, Pacquiao will be in Manila today and will be at the Araneta Coliseum tomorrow for another Kia game in the PBA.

Pacquiao will not play and risk hurting himself.

The biggest fight in history is up ahead.
