Horrigan bags overall title

-

MANILA, Philippines - Bobby Horrigan ruled two of the last three races to beat Charlie Cojuangco for the overall championship in the third leg of the TRS Cup at the Batangas Racing Circuit recently.

Horrigan’s fiery showing netted him 103.5 points from four wins and three runner-up finishes as he swept past Cojuangco, who ended up with 96 points.

The TRS Cup powered by the Ford Fiesta is the newest grassroots circuit car program from Tuason Racing School. It is backed by Castrol and Bridgestone, major sponsors Standard Insurance, Coke Zero, Hafele, Ford Alabang, Smart Bro, and Smart Netphone, official time U-boat, official partners Oakley, Rota, OMP, Hastravel, Speedlab, Starbright Bodykits, Emotion, and AAP and media partners C! Magazine, Channel V, Stoplight TV, Turbozone, Kotse.com and 99.5RT and Lifeline Arrows.

Stefan Wolf of Hafele finished third overall with 69 points while Ross Jackes of Pacific Jet Corp. and Basti Escalante of SmartBro placed fourth and fifth with 55 and 48 points, respectively.

Horrigan came up with a quick start in Race 7 and built a big lead midway before wrapping up the five-lap race in six minutes, 40.268 seconds or 2.996 seconds ahead of Cojuangco, who clocked 6:43.264.

Ross Jackes took third place in 6:44.223 while Ding Dizon of Coke Zero and Escalante of Smart Bro checked in fourth and fifth, respectively.

Horrigan sustained his pace and went all-out in Race 8 to virtually assure himself of the overall plum.

Like in Race 7, he zoomed ahead of the pack and completed the eight-lap race in 17 minutes, 4.919 seconds, 3.874 seconds ahead of Wolf.

Cojuangco came in third in 17:10.356 while Ross Jackes and Ding Dizon finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

With the title in the bag, Horrigan simply cruised in Race 9 and wound up sixth.

Dizon topped the last race against Escalante, clocking 17 minutes, 12.315 seconds. Escalante timed 17:13.303.

Korean Micky Kim of Team Auto Access finished third in 17:14.495 seconds while Stefan Wolf and Ross Jackes ended fourth and fifth, respectively.

The TRS Cup, powered by the Ford Fiesta, highlighted the three-event TRS Raceday, dubbed as “the Philippines’ Motorsports Festival.” The day-long event featured different grassroots racing events such as drag race, Castrol track days, autocross and time attack challenge. It also had lifestyle and consumers events that drew close to 3,000 spectators and participated in by more than 350 cars.

“It was a huge success and we’re planning to make it bigger and more exciting this season,” said TRS president JP Tuason.
