MANILA, Philippines —  Summer vacation is over and it’s once again time for school!

For some kids, academic excellence comes naturally, while for others, it is a struggle. But for parents, providing the best for their kids is the most important for the school season.

Here are some must-haves you can consider in your back-to-school checklist.

Style options for kids

Titled "Fashion Play," the event enabled kids to enjoy the day as the brand presented its new collection of childhood fashion staples.

Believing that all kids are beautiful, SM Kids recently celebrated the fun and exciting details of childhood in SM Mall of Asia. Titled "Fashion Play," the event enabled kids to enjoy the day as the brand presented its new collection of childhood fashion staples, made exciting through vibrant colors and whimsical prints.

The event also featured a grand fashion show featuring the brand's four key lines, each with their own fresh offerings every kid will look forward to donning.

The swimwear collection highlights the vibrant colors and playfulness of prints with a wide range of florals, fruits and lovable animals. Swimming in style, these designs come in different silhouettes that come in one piece or two-piece combos that can be mix and matched.

Another collection is the LOL Surprise!, a funky dolls-inspired theme with a unique sense of style and personality, where kids can have fun pairing different trends together.

Tees & Denim puts a twist on basics. Boys tees offer novelty graphics that echo their favorite comics, while girls tees are embellished with fantasy details such as appliqués of unicorns and mermaids.

Finally, the array highlights the cheerful effect of colors inspired by familiar comforts of nature—from vibrant tones of marigold to sugary pastels inspired by the ocean.

Sustainable 'sole' mates

Shoes made with Bionic material, spun from plastic recovered from marine and coastal environments.

Drawing on a heritage of innovation and a love for the sea, American footwear brand Sperry, known for creating the original boat shoe, is introducing a new collection of shoes made with Bionic material, spun from plastic recovered from marine and coastal environments.

A selection of silhouettes draw on the brand's sailing roots, featuring materials and styling inspired by vibrant, multi-colored sailboat sails, water-inspired patterns, and stitching details. The collection’s packaging features eco-friendly innovations: shoe boxes are made from 100 percent recycled paper material, and only with vegetable ink and water-based glue.

To educate people on ways they can help protect the environment by reducing their use of plastic, the brand partnered with global and local partners to effectively facilitate its "Look Good. Do Good" platform. Among its partners is Waterkeeper Alliance, the largest and fastest growing nonprofit solely focused on clean water. It also works with Bionic, a mission-driven material engineering company, on its Ocean Plastic Recovery Initiative — mobilizing a network of Waterkeeper groups around the world to establish recycling infrastructure and plastic recovery efforts to stop plastic pollution from entering our oceans.

In the Philippines, the company came on board with Save Philippine Seas and SIP Ph to extend its advocacy’s reach to many Philippine bodies of water. Save Philippine Seas is a non-profit organization founded in 2011 created to educate and organize community-based projects to protect marine and coastal assets of the country. Calling everyone to be “seatizens,” Save Philippine Seas utilizes social media to amplify their call to action. A quick visit to their website allows one to download a tool kit that anyone can use to help spread the word on what can be done to preserve Philippine waters.

Meanwhile, SIP is a Filipino enterprise that champions waste management solutions and produces reusable cutlery and straws. Its project, “Loop”, curates products from local and international brands that offer sustainable and more conscious products.

Endless summer style

The collection has anything rom the seasonal fruit design to embroidered tropical birds.

To make the most out of the full sunny season mode, cool prints and vibrant shades on your footwear are in order. Iconic American sneaker brand Keds teamed up with Sunnylife, the world's leading summer lifestyle brand (known for those giant pool floats you've been seeing all over Instagram), to bring fun, sunny Australian style to its beloved sneakers.

From the seasonal fruit design to embroidered tropical birds, the collection includes Triple Sunnylife Islabomba, a platform sneaker with a vibrant geometric print reminiscent of tropical seaside patterns; Kickstart sneaker with new Dream Foam footbeds for all-day comfort; Double Decker Sunnylife Embroidery, an espadrille-inspired creation that mixes earthy elements like jute-wrapped bottoms and canvas uppers with embroidered tropical birds; the Champion sneaker with cotton canvas uppers; and Bliss II Sandal with air foam outsoles and contoured footbeds with added arch support.

Level up in school style

Skechers recently launched its Back-To-School Collection with shoes that aim to marry style and comfort without breaking school rules. For teens, the Go Run 600 is a clean look that imbibes a fresh athletic feel. The pair’s lightweight construction and midsoles are suitable for sports.

Meanwhile, the Side Street Ostmoor is a sleek street sneaker with stitching and other features such as air-cooled memory foam technology. For the daily uniform, the Harper-Forde and Moreno-Relton shoes are for everyday use. Achieve balance through hydration

While too much oil can clog up your pores, dryness will make your skin age faster.

Truth is, perfect skincare is hard to figure out. Ever wonder how your skin can change its texture and quality so easily—from lifelessly pale when you wake up, it goes oily during your office commute, only to dry up in small patches as you settle into your airconditioned room? Pollution, weather, temperature, and even your cosmetic choices affect the quality of your skin in ways that you don’t often expect.

While too much oil can clog up your pores, dryness will make your skin age faster. The latest buzzword in skin care, achieving moisture balance will keep your skin from becomingtoo oily or too dry. Céleteque Hydration Facial Wash contains mild cleansing agents that aim to strip the dirt off from skin, without drying it out.

Unlike other facial washes that are too harsh, the Hydration Facial Wash is a two-in-one cleanser and moisturizer with Natural Moisturising Factor (NMF) that aims to restore the skin’s proper moisture balance. NMF helps magnetize hydration onto the skin, helping restore the skin’s quality to a balanced state.

The initiative aims to support and promote the recent law that seeks seeks to protect children whenever they are brought into a motor vehicle. It is in response to the increasing number of child fatalities due to vehicular accidents.

In pursuit of the environment

Established in 1994, the company has been developing and managing insurance programs for companies from a wide range of sectors such as education.

Lockton Philippines, one of the country’s leading insurance and risk management providers, is celebrating its 25th anniversary with the launch of the 1stLockton Philippines Legacy Awards.

Established in 1994, the company has been developing and managing insurance programs for companies from a wide range of sectors such as power, energy, education, food, transportation, business process outsourcing (BPO), and infrastructure, among many others. The company is an affiliate of Lockton Companies Inc., touted as the world’s largest privately held insurance brokerage firm with over 90 offices in different countries.

With its thrust of helping make businesses better, the company is turning its attention to an issue that has had an increasingly significant impact on industries and communities – environmental risk.

“Though it does not immediately come to mind when talking about business risks, the reality is that the environment poses some of the biggest threats to industries,” says Vic Valledor, President & CEO of Lockton Philippines. “Similarly, the way businesses operate has the same huge impact on the environment. Solutions that lessen their environmental impact will also help in effectively dealing with the risks that this brings.”

The Legacy Awards is designed to recognize action research initiatives that promote responsible and efficient use of resources andhelp bring positive change in the way people look at protecting the environment.

According to Valledor, “We want to engage the next generation of minds, nurturing the ideas that can refine local business practices and promote better livelihood. It’s a wonderful way to celebrate our anniversary – giving college students a chance to represent their school and bring their big ideas to a national stage while helping protect the environment.”

The awards program requires participants to submit an evaluative, investigative, and analytical action research proposal that presents better practices for businesses to operate. It is open to teams of three to five Filipino college students, currently enrolled in a BS or BA program in any Philippine tertiary education institution. Each team is required to have one faculty adviser who is duly recognized by the school.

Nino Sauler, Lockton Philippines AVP and head of the awards program committee, says, “Knowing that conditions and environmental concerns, as well as corresponding solutions may vary in different areas, we’ve opened the competition to colleges and universities nationwide.” He continues, “We particularly want to reach schools in the provinces – those that haven’t had the opportunity to join competitions such as the Legacy Awards.”

To further encourage participation of more schools outside the big cities, the Legacy Awards is selecting winners from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, aside from the over-all Grand Prize winner. Participating teams also have the opportunity to win special awards, which focus on indigenous communities and marine conservation.

Deadline of submission of entries is on September 2. All winning entries will be announced in October, with the possibility of collaborating with partner companies to have the winning proposals implemented. More information can be found on the company's Facebook page.

Go greener with reusable cups and straws

The reusable cup is nearly identical to the brand's iconic white cup and is made from polypropylene, a plastic widely accepted into global recycling infrastructure.

To encourage reusability on Earth Day and to inspire its customers to make more sustainable choices all year long, Starbucks recently launched hot and cold cups in the Philippines. Reducing its environmental footprint and positively impacting the communities it serves has always been important to the company, so starting April 22, the reusable cups and straws were made available at all of the brand's stores in the Philippines.

The reusable cup is nearly identical to the brand's iconic white cup and is made from polypropylene, a plastic widely accepted into global recycling infrastructure. The new reusable cups are designed to make the cup sturdier than paper and is a more sustainable approach to single-use packaging.

From April 22 to 26, customers who brought their reusable cups, personal tumblers or mugs of at least 16oz. in size or higher were given the option to donate their Php5 cup discount to their choice of environmental organization from the brand's non-government organization partners. Upon choosing an organization to donate to, customers will receive a complimentary upsize. Customers may choose between the World Wildlife Fund for Nature Philippines or the Haribon Foundation, two organizations dedicated to preserving life and nature.

Globally, an estimated 600 billion paper and plastic cups are distributed annually. The brand's cups account for around one percent of that total. Since 2014, the brand has offered the reusable cup in the U.S., Canada and the U.K. and so far the company has sold more than 25 million globally.

Last year, the company also announced its goal of removing all plastic straws in its store globally by 2020. In the Philippines, the coffee brand has also begun taking steps towards this goal with the Skip the Straw initiative. At local stores, customers are offered to skip the straws, disposable utensils and napkins for their orders and are provided more sustainable options including specially-designed sipping lids and compostable straws.

“We’ve seen an increase in public awareness and concern for the plasticwaste issuein recent years. We’re proud to provide a reusable option in all Starbucks® stores in the Philippines without making sacrifices to our customers’ daily coffee needs,” said Keith Cole, head of marketing, category and QA, Starbucks Philippines.“While there is still a long way to go, we’re excited to work with others to find global solutions and encourage our customers to choose reusability whenever possible.”

Breakfast recipes for better mornings

Champorado with Whole Rolled Oatmeal, Healthy Breakfast Hotcakes with Fresh Fruits, Beef Pastrami Benedict

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day– but also the one we often skip due to the early morning rush to prepare ourselves for work and the kids for school. But with a little inspiration and help from The Maya Kitchen, one can put together a hot and healthier breakfast on the fly.

Quick, simple and delicious, this Champorado with Whole Rolled Oatmeal recipe only requires four ingredients — Maya Champorado Mix, whole rolled oatmeal, sugar, and water. A bowl of this flavorful champorado might warm one's belly and keep it full well until lunch time.

For picky eaters who don’t like fruits, the Healthy Breakfast Hotcakes with Fresh Fruits might help change their stubborn mind. Prep the batter and pour it into a slightly greased pan or flat skillet. Just wait for the top to turn bubbly, then flip over. Finish by topping with fresh fruit and maple syrup or honey.

Serve a hearty Beef Pastrami Benedict in less than 30 minutes. Take a piece of ciabatta bread and pile slices of pastrami, tomatoes and arugula leaves. Place one poached egg on top, then drizzle with hollandaise sauce. You can make your own hollandaise at home to use for a variety of meals. Here’s how: Beat egg yolks in a pot of simmering water, remove the bowl from heat, and then pour butter lemon juice, salt and white pepper. Continue mixing until it smoothens, and you’ve got the sauce ready to go.

The chocolate that helps address malnutrition

More than four million children in the Philippines suffer from malnutrition. Knowing this problem, snacks company Mondelez Philippines launched the Cadbury Dairy Milk Generosity Bar recently at Glorietta, Makati. It donates the milk content from its bar to help nourishkids in need. With every purchase of the product, a glass of milk will be donated to a child in need for nutrition with the help of the organization Feed Philippines.

Through the Cadbury Dairy Milk Generosity Bar, everyone has the opportunity to donate the milk from their favourite chocolate bar to those who need it the most.  Every bar contains less milk because it has been removed to share with a child in need of nourishment.

“We at Cadbury Dairy Milk believe that every child deserves to be provided with the rightnutrition in order to grow up healthy and strong,” said Arlene Amante, Brand Manager of Mondelez Philippines.

The future holds many opportunities and challenges; and parents can help their children navigate through these so that they can become the best version of themselves. To accompany families in their journey to the future, Nestlé Nankid, along with its ambassadors, hosted the Reshape Glamp.

The Glamp was a summer event that brought together parents and children in a camp setting filled with activities that aimed at fostering an open mind, cultivating a positive attitude, and showcasing optimal nutrition-- the essentials of setting up a child’s optimal growth and development.

To ensure that the guests gear up for an exciting adventure ahead, parents and their children met with their camp masters that explained the camp rules and were given camp essentials they can use at every campsite activity. Parents and kids gamely went fishing for nutrition tips. Parents and children threw a giant dice to get to the summit and finish the positivity trail.

Then, everyone gathered together for a short and interactive storytelling session. Parents also reflected on their aspirations for their children, where they wrote letters expressing their commitment to do their best in helping their children prepare for life’s ever-changing challenges and complexities in the years to come.

“A camping adventure allows children and their families to encounter obstacles from which they can see as growth opportunities, especially the importance of staying positive and thinking creatively.  Skills and capabilities are traits that can be developed if one has an optimal growth mindset, which is what this Reshape Glamp intends to do. These, along with optimal nutrition with the help of Nestlé NANKID, aids in continuing the advocacy to reshape the future and open a world full of possibilities,” said Jean Espino, Vice President for Marketing, Nestlé Premium Milks.
