ILOILO CITY, Philippines — Mayor Adolfo Jaen, 82, died around 7 p.m. at St. Paul’s Hospital in Iloilo City due to multiple organ failure Sunday evening. He is survived by his wife Estella.

Vice Mayor Romi Marañon, who broke the news on Monday, said Jaen was a known practicing lawyer and served as mayor of the town for several years. Marañon described him as his very close friend. “Our relationship is very harmonious,” he said.

Governor Arthur Defensor Sr. also extended his condolences to the members of Jaen’s family. “Mayor Jaen devoted the best years of his life serving the people of Leganes,” he said.

Jaen's remains is now laid at the Moleta Memorial Chapel and Services in Miagao town of Iloilo, and will be brought to the Leganes Municipal Hall today (Sept. 19), and then interred on Sept. 26.

Based on the law of succession, Marañon, also a lawyer, replaced Jaen and took his oath of office before Defensor at the Capitol yesterday. He was joined by his wife, Edith, daughter Frances Anne and 2nd district Board Member Demy Sonza.

Marañon’s post as vice-mayor will be succeeded by number one Municipal Councilor Lyle Bartolome.

Since the vacancy was created by the death of Jaen, a Liberal Party member, Marañon said it will be up to the party to nominate someone who will fill in the vacant position in the Council. (PNA)
