No 'overkill' in death of amok — PNP

Gilbert P. Bayoran - The Freeman

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — The Philippine National Police has debunked claims that there was an overkill in the death of the 30-year-old man, who reportedly ran amok at Barangay Fabrica in Sagay City, Negros Occidental last Sunday.

The family and relatives of Ruel Luneta, who was killed by a policeman --- who responded to the public's call for help --- reportedly slammed the police for that they called was an overkill.

The killing of Luneta by a policeman, is now being investigated by the Regional Internal Affairs Office of the Police Regional Office-6. Senior Police Officer 1 Ronnie Sanico, who shot and killed Luneta, was disarmed of his firearm, pending ballistic examinations.

Investigations of the Sagay City Police showed that Luneta, who was armed with a cane cutter, chased and attempted to hack the three children of Nanette Nava, and an adult person.

Chief Inspector Robert Mansueto, Sagay City Police chief, disclosed that two members of the Barangay Peacekeeping Action Team (BPAT) and Sanico were also attacked by Luneta, who was later shot by the police.

Based on the findings of the Sagay City Health Office, Luneta died of three entrance and three exit gunshot wounds, in the chest, right lower abdomen and right elbow, Mansueto said.
