In Dumaguete City: Amores wins president of Liga ng mga Barangay

Juancho R. Gallarde - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — “It was a very close fight, but the Liga ng mga Barangay captains have spoken” by electing Motong Barangay Captain Dionne Amores as their president over Daro Barangay Captain Jovencio Tan Jr. by 16-14 votes.

This was the statement issued by Dumaguete City Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo in emphasizing that he has a lot of plans for the barangays and that he has no time to explain to everybody. “I expect that you also support the plans and programs of the city for the good of everybody.”

The 16-14 score between Amores and Tan was also the same for the vice president, with Barangay Captain Nelson Ablir of Poblacion 5 winning over Barangay Captain Harrison Gonzales of Poblacion 1.

Other elected Liga officials are Bantayan Barangay Captain Nerio Grapa (auditor), and for board of directors: Barangay Captains Randy Fausto of Tabuctubig; Paciencio Maquiling (Banilad); Anthony Ozoa (Poblacion 3); Ma. Isabel Sagarbarria (Calindagan); Maelene Mariano (Poblacion 8); Greg Oira (Candau-ay); and Pedro Suniega (Poblacion 2).

Amores said he will try to unify the Liga ng mga Barangay of the city and to work independently in its vision and mission.  He assured the 29 other barangay captains that he will support their plans and programs for the benefit of the barangays. He denied observations the 30 barangays were split into two, even if election results showed that 14 barangay captains are supporting Mayor Remollo, and 16 others, including himself, are backed by Representative Manuel Sagarbarria (2nd district, Negros Oriental), the former Dumaguete mayor.

After winning the Liga election, Amores then clarified to the members that he is not only president of the 16 barangay captains who voted for him, but for all the others who voted for his opponent.

Remollo told The Freeman: “I hope they reflected on their own decision, because their decision will greatly affect the future of their respective barangays and that of the city if they did not choose their Liga president wisely.”

He added that the Liga election of its representative in the City Council is “material in the passage of ordinances and the future of the city’s plans and programs.” (FREEMAN)
