Man rescued after jumping off passenger ship in Iloilo

Jennifer P. Rendon - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines – A 29-year-old man was immediately rescued Tuesday morning off Iloilo City seawaters after he jumped overboard a passenger ship that was about to sail for Bacolod City.

Lieutenant Commander Dominador Senador of the Philippine Coast Guard-Iloilo Station identified the man as Robert Lloyd Reyes, a native of La Castellana town in Negros Occidental.

Reyes was a passenger of the M/V St. Michael Archangel and was reportedly with his uncle, Nicholas Jimenez, when the incident happened.

A certain Gregory Almedilla, a driver who was in the ship, alerted the master of M/V St. Michael Archangel when he saw Reyes jumped from the deck at the starboard of the ship, which was still docked at the Arrastre Pier of Port San Pedro in Iloilo City.

Reyes was immediately rescued while the vessel's medical team gave him medical assistance. He sustained wounds on his forehead and both of his legs were fractured.

It was not yet known what triggered the victim to jump overboard, added Senador.
