MANILA, Philippines — Nanawagan ang green energy advocates sa pangunguna ng Po­wer for People Coalition (P4P) at apektadong komunidad sa Department of Energy (DOE) na ipa­tupad ang “coal moratorium” at tanggalin ang mga “coal-fired power plants” sa bansa upang hindi lalong lumala ang masamang ibinubunga nito sa kalikasan na nagdudulot ng kalamidad par­tikular­ ang madalas at mas ma­lalakas na bagyo.

“Coal fuels disasters. It’s plain and simple. So long as we burn coal, its greenhouse gas emissions will continue to heat the Earth and produce typhoons like Rolly and Ulysses, only much stronger and more frequently. It’s already too late to reverse the current trend of typhoons, but it’s not too late to stop the trend from becoming worse,” ani Gerry Arances, P4P convenor sa gina­nap na online press conference.

Ani Arances, karbon ang pinakamalaking­ pi­­nag­kukunan ng enerhiya­, na ayon sa DOE ay “technologically neutral” na lalong naghihikayat pa sa pagtatayo ng karagdagang coal power plants sa bansa.

Sa panig naman ni Ian Rivera, national coor­dinator ng Philippine Move­ment for Climate Justice (PMCJ), pantakip lamang ng DOE ang idineklarang “coal moratorium” o hindi na pagtanggap ng aplikasyon para sa pagtatayo ng coal power plants, dahil­ sa kabiguan na ma­so­lusyunan ang taas ng si­ngil ng kuryente sa bansa, na pinakamahal aniya, sa Asya.

Igniit na hindi kayang­ palitan ng paglago ng ekonomiya ang pinsa­lang maidudulot ng climate emergency kung saan ang mga mahihirap ang tinatamaan ng mga pagbaha dulot ng mga bagyo.
