1,147 Mandaluyong jeepney drivers undergo COVID testing
MANDALUYONG, Philippines — Over 1,000 registered jeepney drivers in Mandaluyong have been subjected to rapid testing for the coronavirus disease 2019 or COVID-19.
The local government finished the mass testing of 1,147 drivers days before the government allowed some traditional jeepneys to resume operations in Metro Manila yesterday.
Of the number, the city health department said only one driver tested positive for COVID-19 based on polymerase chain reaction or confirmatory swab testing.
The driver was ordered to undergo isolation and the mandatory 14-day quarantine.
Mayor Menchie Abalos ordered the jeepney drivers to undergo testing to ensure that they are free from the virus before returning to the roads.
Mandaluyong is implementing the “no test, no trip” policy for tricycle and jeepney drivers.
“We will not allow any jeepney or tricycle driver to ply the streets without undergoing COVID-19 test,” Abalos said.
The city government conducted a mandatory rapid testing of 7,500 tricycle drivers last month.
