Diaz namumuro sa Athlete of the Year award
MANILA, Philippines — Tatlong mahuhusay na atleta ang nangunguna sa listahan para maging Athlete of the Year sa prestihiyosong Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Annual Awards night na idaraos sa Marso 5 sa Diamond Hotel.
Nangunguna sa lista-han si Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz, world-ranked pole vaulter EJ Obiena, two-time world champion Carlos Yulo, ang history makers na sina Alex Eala at Filipinas football team.
Maliban sa Athlete of the Year award, ibibigay din ang President’s Award, Hall of Fame, Lifetime Achievement Award, National Sports Association of the Year, Executive of the Year, Mr. Basketball, Ms. Football, Major Awards, Tony Siddayao Awards, Pioneers/Founders Awards, Lifetime Award in Sports Journalism at ang Citations.
Muling gumawa ng ingay si Diaz nang humirit ito ng tatlong ginto sa 88th IWF World Weightlifting Championships sa Bogota, Colombia.
Inangkin ni Diaz ang ginto sa women’s 55 kg class snatch, clean and jerk, at total.
Umani naman si Yulo ng tatlong ginto sa 9th Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships sa Doha, Qatar habang nakapilak at tanso ito sa 51st FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships sa Liverpool, England.
Sa kabilang banda, nakasikwat si Obiena ng tanso sa World Athletics Championships sa Eugene, Oregon matapos magtala ng bagong Asian record.
Gumawa naman ng kasaysayan ang Team Filipinas na nakahirit ng tiket sa prestihiyosong FIFA Women’s World Cup. Nakakuha rin ng tanso ang Filipina booters sa AFC Women’s Asian Cup sa Pune, India.
Hindi rin nagpakabog si Eala na nagreyna sa 142nd US Open junior girls’ singles championship sa Flushing Meadows, New York.
Tinalo ni Eala sa finals si Czech Lucie Havlickova, 6-2, 6-4, para angkinin ang korona.
