Philippines taekwondo jins ready nang sumalang sa Olympic qualifying

MANILA, Philippines — Handang-handa na ang apat na national taekwondo jins na lumaban sa qualifying tournament sa hangaring makakuha ng Olympic Games slot sa Tokyo, Japan sa Hulyo.

Tatarget ng Olympic berth sina 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympian Kirstie Elaine Alora, 2019 Southeast Asian Games medalists Pauline Lopez, Kurt Barbosa at Arven Alcantara sa Asian Olympic qualifiers sa Mayo 14-16 sa Amman, Jordan.

“Sa stage namin ngayon, emotionally and physically they are all ready,” wika kahapon ni national head coach Carlos Padilla sa People Sports Conversation program ng Philippine Sports Commission (PSC). “Parang hinihintay na lang namin na mapunta kami sa court para lumaban eh.”

Lalaban si Alora sa women’s +73-kilogram at sasalang sina Lopez, Barbosa at Alcantara sa women’s -57kg, men’s -58kg at men’s -68kg. ayon sa pagkakasunod.

Awtomatikong makakalaro sa 2021 Tokyo Games ang dalawang finalists sa bawat weight division, ayon kay national training director Dindo Simpao.

Nakatakda ang Tokyo Olympics sa Hulyo 23 hanggang Agosto 8.

“I think we’re ready, they are all upbeat, they are positive. Thankful for this opportunity and grateful for all this blessings. Talagang ready na sila,” sabi ni Simpao.

Noong Enero pa pumasok ang mga national taekwondo jins sa ‘bubble’ training sa Inspire Sports Academy sa Calamba, Laguna para paghandaan ang Olympic qualifying.

Umaasa sina Alora, Lopez, Barbosa at Alcantara na mapapabilang sila sa national delegation sa Tokyo Olympics kasama sina 2016 Rio de Janeiro silver medalist Hidilyn Diaz (weightlifting), Ernest John Obiena (pole vault), Carlos Edriel Yulo (gymnastics) at sina boxers Eumir Felix Marcial, Irish Magno, Nesthy Petecio at Carlo Paalam.
