MANILA, Philippines — Nagbigay pugay si Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr. kay Lydia de Vega-Mercado kasabay ang pagpapahatid ng kanyang pakikiramay sa pamilya at mga nagmamahal sa sports icon.

“I join the entire nation in mourning the untimely demise of former Asian sprint queen Lydia de Vega, after a four-year battle with breast cancer. My sincerest condolences to her family and loved ones,” ani Marcos.

Kinilala rin ni Marcos si De Vega-Mercados para sa kanyang kontribusyon sa industriya ng palakasan.

Inalala ni Marcos ang panalo ni De Vega-Mercado ng 100-meter gold medal noong 1982 at 1986 Asian Games at namuno sa sprint double sa Asian Athletics Championship noong 1983 at 1987.

Sinabi rin ni Marcos na minsan nang tinawag si De Vega-Mercado  na fastest woman in Asia at inilagay niya ang Pilipinas sa mapa ng international athletics.

“She is also a nine-time Southeast Asian Games gold medalist. All in her favorite event, the 100-meter dash. Lydia was also a two-time Olympian, having represented the Philippines in the 1984 Los Angeles and 1988 Seoul Olympics,” dagdag ni Marcos.

Pumanaw si De Vega-Mercado, 56, noong Miyerkules ng gabi.

Ang pagpanaw ni De Vega-Mercado ay ini­ha­yag ng kanyang anak na si Stephanie Mercado Koenigswarter sa isang Facebook post.

Sinabi rin ni Marcos na tumakbo na si De Vega-Mercado sa kanyang hu­ling karera at natapos nito ang huli niyang laban.
