DA warns swine stakeholders re ASF

CEBU, Philippines — The Department of Agriculture in Central Visayas has warned stakeholders in the swine business against the African Swine Fever (ASF).

Regional technical director Joel Elumba said the ASF is everyone's concern in the industry.

"We must prevent the entry of ASF as this will affect the swine industry of the country," he said.

The agency gathered last week swine industry stakeholders to discuss measures to prevent the entry of meat affected by ASF into the country.

The DA is urging stakeholders to monitor and be vigilant on the entry of meat products from countries affected by ASF.

The Philippines has so far no cases of ASF.

Various issues and concerns were discussed during the Central Visayas Regional Stakeholders Briefing on ASF at Bayfront Hotel, Cebu City.

Some issues discussed include the bringing of pork meat and by-products by travellers, transhipment of meat from one port to another port, proper disposal of animals and their wastes, and the hiring of veterinarians in large piggery farms.

Local government units also expressed commitment to support the prevention of ASF.

Central Visayas is the fifth biggest swine producer in the country.

The Philippines is also the eight biggest swine producer globally. (FREEMAN)
