Remember whom not to vote for tomorrow

WHAT MATTERS MOST - Atty. Josephus B. Jimenez - Pang-masa

The barangay, next to the family, is the basic foundation of the nation. The barangay leaders elected tomorrow should be the best among the choices, not only competent but also honest, not only men and women of words but also action. Voters should scrutinize not only their credentials but also their character, attitudes, and values, not just the educational attainment and college degrees. Barangay leaders must be models for the youth and give honor to their village.

I have some proposed guidelines you may wish to use in choosing whom to vote. First, do not vote for a candidate who is linked to drugs, illegal gambling, child prostitution, and other crimes and immoral activities. Second, do not vote for a member of a dynasty; the son, daughter, or nephew and niece of the mayor, the councilor or the vice mayor. Do not support an aspirant who is endorsed and funded by a political party. Third, do not vote for a candidate who exploits his workers, commits unfair labor practices, and cheats them of correct wages and benefits. Fourth, do not vote for an adulterer, or one who abandons his family to have a second or third wife, who sexually exploits women and children.

If you vote for candidates supported by drug money, you are making a decision to destroy the youth, the family, and the nation. By voting for a narco-politician, you declare war against the president, the government, the police, and your loved ones. If you vote for candidates linked to illegal gambling and cybersex, you become part of the problem, not part of the solution. If you vote for candidates supported by crime syndicates, you count yourself as an enemy of the Filipino people. So be sure to reject these shenanigans in our community.

If you vote for barangay officials who are puppets of the mayor or congressman, your village will be dictated by the whims and caprices of traditional politicians. Family dynasties are bringing the country down. They consider the local governments as their family corporations, and enrich themselves through power, influence, and connections, while the people become poorer and poorer. If you vote for violators of labor laws, you are giving a stamp of approval for social injustice inflicted upon the working class. Let your voice be heard in a very special way. Send a message of thumbs down to the dirty old politicos who have no more place in a decent, God-fearing nation.

Remember that evil triumphs because you put him in office. Destroy those rascals even before they can hold public office.
